Verizon To End Unlimited Data Plans By July 7 [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] A Verizon Wireless rep has reached out to The Huffington Post with the following details:

On July 7, we are offering customers more smartphone data plan options. Customers may choose from $30 for 2G, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10 GB data plans. Customers who have feature phones have an additional option of $10 for 75 MB. Customers currently using an unlimited smartphone plan will be able to upgrade to another 3G or 4G LTE smartphone and keep their unlimited data plan.

[PREVIOUSLY] We knew this day was coming: Verizon will end unlimited data plans by July 7.

The company has planned to move new customers over to tiered data plans for a while now, a pricing structure that competitor AT&T already implements. DroidLife first reported the date and pricing of the shift in late June.

A Verizon spokesperson confirmed with FierceWireless that new Verizon subscribers will be able to choose from three different data plans: $30 for 2GB, $50 for 5GB or $80 for 10GB, with overage charges of $10 per GB of data. Customers who are already on unlimited plans can still upgrade and keep their old plans.

LTE mobile hotspot use will also begin to cost $30 a month for unlimited service.

Verizon already throttles speeds for especially heavy data users.
