Google Introduces New Sorting Styles For Gmail

For those who want a better way to organize their inbox, Google has introduced new sorting features to Gmail.

Like Priority Inbox which debuted last year, the new assortment of sorting styles are designed to help users manage their emails based on the way that they feel most comfortable doing so.

In the next few weeks, Google will start rolling out three new sorting styles that reflect users' mail preferences. The "Important first" option will prioritize both read and unread emails that are deemed "important" and will place these messages at the top of the user's inbox. "Unread first" puts unread emails first, followed by all other inbox items. "Starred first" emphasizes starred emails.

Once the change has rolled out to your account, Google says that the new sorting features will appear as tabs above the inbox. Google will also add tabs for current sorting options "Classic" (chronologically sorted with the most recent at top) and "Priority" (where Google determines which unread items are most "important" and places them at the top, followed by starred emails).

Google notes that once a user has stuck to a style for about a week, the tabs will disappear, though the user can reconfigure his sorting style in his Gmail account settings.

Google will also be rolling out Gmail's redesigned interface soon.
