"We have been working with the youth, faith-based groups and women in Egypt to emerge a new economy based on green technologies, products and services. Only 4% of the land in Egypt is producing food. Egypt is wasting its sunlight,
water and wind.
Egypt is also wasting the talent and skills of the youth. With a population explosion to 80 million we must provide a NEW economic framework for every Egyptian citizen to live green and sustainably.
In Cairo, pollution is high and oxygen levels low..taxi drivers have Road Rage. The streets are dirty and civic pride is low. One luxury apartment landlord told me that it didint matter that the comon areas were dirty and littered with garbage as tenants paid the rent no matter how it looked! We must restore the dignity of the Egyptian youth and empower them to take pride in their environment and be part of the solution.
100 million youth are unemployed in the Middle East. Brookings Institute has called them "A Generation in waiting".
I have proposed a MENA Social Entrepreneur Licence for all youth 16-25 to apply for that entitles them to select one micro-enterprise to operate. Each youth commits to learn, earn and serve. They receive a 'Business in a Box' with all the knowledge , processes and technologies to start earning.
In a country where 13% of jobs and 11% of the gross domestic product comes from tourism, the impact of these events is severe. According to the Egypt Tourist Authority in New York, 14.7 million tourists visited Egypt last year, generating $11 billion in revenue. Even if the transition to a new government goes smoothly, it will likely be a year or more before Egypt's tourism industry recovers.
